HIGHLIGHTING FINISHES

Polishing & Finishing PalletteOnce the background of the bronze plaque has been painted, the surface areas (these are the raised letters of lines of artwork) are highlighted by sanding (flat areas) or buffing (sculpted areas). To inhibit natural oxidization, a clear, protective coating is then applied.

Satin Bronze — The Natural metal colour with subtle horizontal grain lines.

Polished Bronze — The natural metal color buffed to a high gloss, obtained by polishing with successively finer abrasives, then buffing with fine buffing compound.

Chrome Plated Bronze — The raised surface of the bronze plaque is polished to meet the polished bronze specifications. The background of the plaque remains in its “natural sandblast” state, providing contrast with the polished raised surface. The entire plaque is then electro-plated using a standard commercial copper/nickel/chrome plating process.

Protective Finish — In order to protect the natural, highlighted finish of a cast bronze plaque a Clear Protective Lacquer is added providing a low gloss appearance, this clear coating was developed to help ensure many years of carefree maintenance.

  • Clear lacquer is our standard clear, protective coating. Unless otherwise specified, all plaques will receive clear lacquer protective coating.

Book Style Plaques

A book style plaque gives a sense of telling a story with the impression of a book.

There are 3 Book Style plaques available in 2 standard sizes.

  • Flat book,
  • Raised Book
  • Loose Leaf Raised Book

Flat Book

The Flat Book styled plaque is a flat plaque that contains a book style border.

Raised Book

The Raised Book style has a substantial depth of approximately 3cm and has the effect of book pages layered up to the feature face around the edges.

Loose Leaf Raised Book

This type of Memorial Plaque has a base frame that looks like an open book with 2 removable “plaque pages”. It is designed for a memorial where a second inscription is likely to be added or updated at a later date.

One or both sides can be replaced with an updated “plaque page” at a later date.

 Bevelled Edge Plaques

Choose a bevelled edge plaque when you want to give your plaque the sense of an elevated appearance or if the plaque is to be placed horizontally.

The edges of a bevelled edge plaque slope away from the feature face to the perimeter making the face wider than the outer edges. The bevelled edges along with small gaps in plaque borders enable water to run off to preserve the face of the plaque.

Bronze Alloy

Bronze plaques are the popular choice for interior as well as exterior applications. Although the finish of bronze will naturally patina over time, the material itself will never deteriorate.

Objects made from bronze have been found submerged in seawater for over 3000 years still in excellent condition.

Bronze alloy specification. Equivalent to Copper Development Association Alloy C83600;
Generally 85% copper, 5% tin, 5% zinc, 5% lead.

Calculating the weight of a bronze plaque

The weight of a bronze plaque may be roughly estimated by calculating the plaque’s volume in cm (height x width x depth) x 8.7.

For most smaller plaques (under 90 cm x 80 cm) allow 0.65cm as the approximate depth. Use 0.9cm for plaques over 90cm x 80cm.

Example: For a 90 cm x 60cm plaque calculate 90 x 60 x 0.65 = 3510 cc x 8.7 = 30537 g.  The plaque’s estimated weight would be 30.54kg or  67 lbs.

Aluminium Alloy

Aluminium plaques are more suited to indoor applications or where regular maintenance is possible and budget is a factor.

Aluminium plaques are cheaper due the lower cost per Kg of the Aluminium alloy and the aluminium alloy is also lighter. However Aluminium although corrosion resistant is not as resilient as Bronze.

The casting alloy of aluminium does not lend itself to polishing. Polished aluminium plaques are unavailable.

Aluminium Alloy specification. LM25
Generally 93% Aluminium, 7% Silicon.

Calculating the weight of an aluminium plaque

The weight of the plaque may be roughly estimated by calculating the plaque’s volume in cm (height x width x depth) x 2.7.

For most smaller plaques (under 90 cm x 80 cm) allow 0.65cm as the approximate depth. Use 0.9cm for plaques over 90cm x 80cm.

Example: For a 90 cm x 60cm plaque calculate 90 x 60 x 0.65 = 3510 cc x 2.7 = 9477 g.  The plaque’s estimated weight would be 9.5 kg or 21 lbs.

Graphics

Truly personalise and embellish a plaque by including graphics that have meaning and purpose, whether it be a logo, a favourite flower, an animal or object, or maybe it is an elegant and personally drawn art design.

If your graphic can be drawn with pen or within a computer application, it will be able to be included in your plaque design.
